Fiona Ashworth
David Lilley and Fiona Ashworth completed the Marrakech Half Marathon in 01:23:54 and 01:43:53 respectively, as well as racing Fiona also turned poet. Sunday morning in Marrakesh, Fi was being nesh, out on the balcony I stepped, and out came the hoody, now I was prepped! Down for breaky, a bit of toast with peanut butter... more than most. All fuelled up, it was time to go, nerves kicking in, where does this run begin? Crossing the road, challenge one (wacky races), next was to find the start of the half marathon. I made it alone, I joined the crowd, lining up the buzz was loud. I got papped with drones and phones, random locals asked for photos Sun was shining, there was a chill in the air, it better warm up I thought as this was hard to bare. At 9.30 the gun went off, this is it, had my training paid off! Adrenaline was pumping, crowds were on form, the views were stunning...how lucky I am to be running. Palm trees, snow topped Atlas mountains and lots of beautiful fountains. Just a snippet whilst I tried to run as fast as a whippet Past the kings palace and then the slums, the support was superb, you could smell the fresh herbs, the sun started beating down my legs were getting brown (I hoped). Mile 6 to 8 and it was starting to grate, pain is temporary, you can do this, is all I kept saying, you've done it before Fi stop being silly. The last 5 miles seemed so long but the kiddies high fives got me along. Drums and cheers but definitely no celebratory beers (yet)...didnt matter the end was near! 1km to go a French man shouts, thank you and a clap for the happy chap. Final stretch and I ran flat out, Allez allez allez I heard them shout! 350 metres the final sign said...thank goodness for that my legs are like lead. My watch buzzed the end in site...I gave the final length all my might. 1.43 I was filled with glee, not a PB but it certainly didn't worry me!
