Club Race Reports Season 2012-2013
Borders League
Race 1 - Caernarfon - 21/10/2012 - Seniors
The first Borders League fixture of 2012-13 took place at Caernarfon. Both teams finished in first place in their respective divisions, an excellent result. Wallasey's men hold a slender lead over Wirral A.C. thanks to a great effort from all the runners, Greg Jones achieved a top 10 finish completing the 10k course in 35:50 for 9th place. Hot on his heels was Phil Walton in 14th (36:38) other counters were Richard Webster, Colin Palmer, Mike Green, Keith Simpson, Steve Smith, John Armstrong, Phil Cuthbert and Wil Amis. The ladies were led home by Sallie Holt 43:29 (8th) a solid run. Assisting her were Sheila Rae and Jessica Lovell.
Race 2 - Capenhurst - 11/11/2012 - Seniors
Over 350 runners completed the second Borders League fixture at Capenhurst. Wallasey A.C. had 40 representatives enabling the ladies to win the second division race and the men to finish third. Sallie Holt (9th), Kim McEneany (13th) and Jess Lovell (25th) were the ladies counters and Karl Pickstock (8th), Greg Jones (15th), Phil Walton (19th), Tony Barbat, John Thelwell, Colin Palmer, Steve Smith, John Armstrong, Keith Simpson and Phil Cuthbert were the male counters.
Race 3 - Christleton - 16/12/2012 - Seniors
Cool temperatures, winter sunshine and a light breeze made for perfect running conditions at the third Borders League fixture in Christleton. 29 runners from Wallasey made the trip and they met with some success as the ladies claimed second place and the men third. The 9.3km course was muddy and waterlogged in places but this did not stop Wallasey ACs competitors packing well. Sallie Holt (10th), Vicky Kehoe (38th) and Sharon Lamont (40th) were the ladies counters and Karl Pickstock (13th), Greg Jones (15th), Colin Palmer (33rd), Tony Barbat (34th), Mike Green (37th), John Armstrong (41st), Phil Cuthbert (54th), Keith Simpson (71st), Ian Stringer (81st) and Martin Connell (83rd) were the male counters. The ladies still lead the second division and the men are second in the first division.
Race 4 - Birkenhead - 13/01/2013 - Seniors
The fourth Borders League fixture of the season took place at Birkenhead Park and was organised by Birkenhead A.C. Wallasey A.C. had top ten finishers in the ladies and men's races. Kim McEneany led the ladies team home in 8th place and Greg Jones spearheaded the men in 10th place. The ladies won the second division by a large margin and have a good lead after the four races. Wallasey's men finished in third place and lie in third place overall. The other counters in the ladies race were Sallie Holt (12th) and Jess Lovell (18th). The male counters were Phil Walton (19th), Richard Webster (30th), John Armstrong (32nd), Tony Barbat (33rd), Connor McArdle (48th), Jon Fairhurst (49th), Ian Stringer (79th), Bryan Stevenson (82nd) and Ian Cannings (84th). All 34 runners contributed to Wallasey A.C.'s success.
Race 5 - Holyhead - 03/02/2013 - Seniors
The fifth Borders League fixture of the season took place on the Rhosneigr motor racing circuit near Holyhead. The fast rack produced some good times but attendance was down with only 202 finishers. Wallasey men's team finished in second place and missed an opportunity to close the gap on leaders Wirral A.C., counting for the men were Karl Pickstock (8th), Greg Jones (9th), Phil Walton (13th), Tony Barbat (17th), Mike Green (21st), John Armstrong (23rd), Jon Fairhurst (29th), Bryan Stevenson (53rd), Derek McArdle (118th) and Mike Griffiths (134th). Kim McEneany led the ladies team home in 6th place, she was closely followed by Sallie Holt (11th) and Vicky Kehoe (28th). The ladies won the second division race on the day and maintain their lead at the top.
Race 6 - Deeside - 10/04/2013 - Seniors
Corus Club Deeside was the location for the sixth borders league fixture after the race was moved from Mold due to safety concerns about running on the road in the twilight. The 5.63 mile course was made up of 2 laps of the industrial estate. The ladies continued there assault on the second division title with yet another big win. The counters for the girls were Kim McEneany (6th), Sallie Holt (12th) and Jessica Lovell (14th). Wallasey men's team finished in third place and now trail Wirral AC by nearly 300 points. Counters were John Thelwell (9th), Karl Pickstock (15th), Greg Jones (18th), John Armstrong (30th), Tony Barbat (35th), Bryan Stevenson (40th), Jez Fellick (42nd), Mike Green (47th), Peter Bird (52nd) and Steve Smith (70th).
Race 7 - Wrexham - 24/04/2013 - Seniors
Wallasey's ladies came away with the second division after a strong campaign in the 7 fixture Borders League season. The team had a winning margin of 323 points and also picked up the improvers trophy. The title was assured after counters Sheila Rae, Sallie Holt and Sharon Lamont came in 22nd, 26th and 41st places respectively. The men had 3 runners in the first 11 finishers, John Thelwell (6th), Karl Pickstock (8th) and Greg Jones (11th). A good effort for the season finale. Other counters for the men were Peter Bird (33rd), Tony Barbat (36th), Phil Bird (96th), Tom Barbat (97th), Martin Connell (109th), John Quirk (133rd) and Derek McArdle (151st). The men finished 5th on the night and held onto 2nd place in the first division. Wallasey AC also finished third in the veterans table. Several runners picked up individual medals, Greg Jones 3rd senior male, Tony Barbat 2nd V50, Kim McEneany 5th senior lady, Sallie Holt 2nd LV35 and Nicci Davies 2nd LV55.
Liverpool & District XC Union
Race 1 - Beacon Park - 27/10/2012 - Seniors
The first fixture of the Liverpool & District League Season took place at a sunny but cool Beacon Park. The conditions weren't as muddy as previous seasons. Wallasey A.C. had 23 runners and finished 6th on the day. Counters were Greg Jones (16th), Karl Pickstock (19th), Phil Cuthbert (37th), John Armstrong (39th), Keith Simpson (41st) and Mike Green (42nd). Sallie Holt was second lady home.
Race 2 - Sefton Park - 24/11/2012 - Seniors
The Sefton Park course was wet and muddy after the rainfall earlier in the week for the second race of the Liverpool & District Cross Country Union season. The event also incorporated the McCain Cross Challenge and the European Cross Country Trials. Wallasey had 22 runners for the race. Karl Pickstock was first home followed by Phil Walton, Greg Jones and John Thelwell. Other counters were Mike Green and Tony Barbat. Wallasey A.C. finished the day in 5th place of the 14 teams who completed the race and remain in 5th place after 2 races. Wallasey also had several marshalls who helped to ensure the race was a success.
Race 3 - Stadt Moers - 08/12/2012 - Seniors
Wallasey AC headed to Stadt Moers Park for the final league fixture of the Liverpool & District Cross Country Union season. The course was muddy and contained some large puddles after the rainfall earlier in the week. The 21 runners help the team to finish fourth on the day and fourth overall. Karl Pickstock (14th) was first home followed by the other counters Phil Walton (16th), Greg Jones (25th), Phil Cuthbert (29th), Colin Palmer (35th) and Mike Green (36th).
Championships - Clarkes Garden - 10/02/2013 - Seniors
Kim McEneany was first lady home in the L&D Cross Country Union Championships at Clarkes Garden. Kim completed the muddy course in 43:59, a superb run. The team finished fourth on the day narrowly missing out on a medal by 3 points. The counters were Karl Pickstock, Phil Walton, John Thelwell, Mike Green, Greg Jones and Jez Fellick. The race doubled as the club's cross country championship, Karl Pickstock and Kim McEneany are confirmed as this season's cross country champions.
Cross Country Championships
Merseyside - Arrowe Park - 05/01/2013 - Mens
The Merseyside County Championships took place at Arrowe Park in mild conditions. Plenty of mud and standing water challenged the athletes.
The men finished fourth on the day. The men's counters were Karl Pickstock (22nd), Greg Jones (28th), Mike Green (30th), John Armstrong (36th), Tony Barbat (41st) and Steve Smith (55th). The ladies finished 5th with Sallie Holt (11th), Kim McEneany (12th), Jessica Lovell (14th) and Julie Barbat (21st) the counters. Sallie Holt won a bronze medal for third V35.
Northern - Knowsley - 26/01/2013 - Mens
With 6 inches of snow on the course and the temperature reaching 7 degrees the runners from Wallasey AC faced tough conditions for their races. The warm temperatures meant that the runners faced, snow, slush and mud throughout the entire course. The ladies performed well finishing in 19th place with the counters being Kim McEneany (92nd), Jess Lovell (114th), Cat Jennings (127th) and Vicky Kehoe (160th). The men's A team finished in 25th place and the B team in 55th. Phil Walton has a strong run coming home first for the club in 170th place, not far behind him was Karl Pickstock (196th) and then Mike Green (236th), Greg Jones (239th), Phil Cuthbert (243rd) and John Armstrong(288th). The organisers did an excellent job just to get the races on and a lot of hard work was put in to achieve this.
National - Herrington Park - 23/02/2013 - Senior Men
Two inches of overnight snow added to an already muddy course at Herrington Park, Sunderland and provided a tough challenge for the Wallasey AC runners. The men finished in 45th place in the six man event and 51st in the nine man event. Phil Walton was the first Wallasey AC runner home completing the course in 52:16 for 334th place. Other counters were Mike Green, John Armstrong, Phil Cuthbert, Greg Jones and Dave Walton. First lady was Kim McEneany who achieved and excellent 121st place in 37:38 for the 8k course.
Wirral Multi Terrain Series
Race 1 - Royden Park - 04/09/2012 - Mens
A large field of 276 gathered at Royden Park for the first multi terrain race of 2012, and there were 36 Wallasey AC runners amongst them. The men's team finished the day in 2nd place and the counters were Greg Jones 8th, John Thelwell 11th, Richard Webster 22nd, Colin Palmer 25th and John Armstrong 32nd, a fine effort. The ladies finished in 5th place with Sallie Holt 8th, Kim McEneany 11th and Jessica Lovell 12th, good packing from the girls and their B team was first B team Cat Jennings 13th, Jess Lowry 21st and Vicky Kehoe 33rd. Aaron Waters made his debut for the club finishing in 11th place in the boy's race.
Race 2 - Thurstaston - 11/09/2012 - Mens
Wallasey AC's runners headed to Wirral Country Park in Thurstaston for the second fixture of the multi terrain series. John Thelwell led the men home in 6th place and was closely followed by Karl Pickstock (8th), Richard Webster (13th), Greg Jones (15th) and Tony Barbat (23rd). The men's team finished second on the night. The ladies counting trio consisted of Jessica Lovell (9th), Kim McEneany (13th) and Jess Lowry (25th) which saw the girls in 5th place.
Race 3 - Harrison Drive - 18/09/2012 - Mens
Wallasey AC hosted the third fixture of the Wirral Multi Terrain series and on a wet and windy night at Harrison Drive the club's runners fared well. The ladies finished in 4th place and are in 4th place overall with Sallie Holt 8th, Kim McEneany 13th and Jess Lovell 15th counting. The men's team won the race with John Thelwell leading the club home in an excellent 3rd place. Other counters were Greg Jones 6th, Karl Pickstock 10th, Richard Webster 11th and Phil Walton 19th. John Thelwell, Richard Webster, Tony Barbat lead their age categories.
Race 4 - Arrowe Park - 25/09/2012 - Mens
The club's runners came away with 7 medals from the Wirral Multi Terrain series of races. The men's team finished in second place overall and the ladies moved up to fourth. Individual honours went to Kim McEneany (2nd lady U30), John Thelwell (2nd U30 male), Greg Jones (3rd Under 30 male), Richard Webster (1st V45), Colin Palmer (1st V50) and Tony Barbat (2nd V50). On the day the men's counters at Arrowe Park were Richard Webster (9th), Greg Jones (10th), John Thelwell (11th), Karl Pickstock (13th) and Phil Walton (16th). This close packing enabled the men to win the night's team race. The ladies finished fourth on the night with Sallie Holt (8th), Kim McEneany (12th) and Jessica Lovell (13th) counting. The conditions on the night were atrocious with the constant rain leaving parts of the course under water.
Christmas Handicap
Christmas Handicap - Wallasey Shore - 23/12/2012 - Seniors
Handicap winner was Connor McArdle and first lady home was Madeleine Cuthbert. Fastest runners on the day with 15:38 was Phil Walton and for the ladies Sharon Lamont 21:49.
