Club Race Reports Season 1936-1937

Liverpool & District XC Union

Championships - Court Hey - 06/03/1937 - Senior Men

Last Saturday the annual championships of the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union were decided at a new venue, by kind permission of Messrs. J. Bibby & Sons Ltd., at Court Hey, Broadgreen. Ideal weather was responsible for the excellent entry of nearly 300 runners, representing 24 Merseyside teams. For Wallasey A.C. the outstanding achievement of the day was W. P. Davy's victory in the Junior championships at his first attempt, in this class, a great feat for a youth of 18. Up with the leaders for three-quarters of the course, Davy forged ahead in the last two miles to finish an easy first in the good time of 35 minutes 48 secs. Team honours would have accrued also but for an unfortunate accident preventing Wallasey completing a full team of six in this event. In the Youths' race over three miles the club had a severe disappointment when N. I. Marples, last year's individual champion, failed to repeat his former success. Marples has not shown his real form this season, but with youth on his side his athletic future is still very bright. R. Yeoman (8th), running steadily throughout, was Wallasey's first man in the event, the team eventually finishing fourth. Norman Jones, Pembroke H., the English international, scored his first success in the Senior championship, covering the nine miles course in 50 mins. 25 secs. J. Edwards, Wallasey's leading senior runner had an "off" day and could do no better than 24th, but he held his position throughout. J. Cunningham ran steadily to finish 28th , the club's third man, while club captain, W. R. Richardson, recovering from a bad first lap, improved his position rapidly on the second and third laps, eventually securing 26th place. The club's veteran competitor, R. Young, was 39th, W. G. Williams 42nd, and F. K. Ledward 45th. H. Jones, C. Parry and T. Sawyer, though not in the club's first six, finished the course in the main body of runners.
