Club Race Reports Season 1910-1911
Liverpool & District XC Union
Championships - Bebington Showground - 18/03/1911 - Junior Men
On Saturday last the 20th Annual Championship races were held at Bebington Show Grounds. Two races were held, the "Novice," over a distance of about 6¼ miles, and the "Senior," over a distance of nine miles. About 120 runners, representing 10 clubs, competed for the former event - the local club entering with the fixed determination of winning. For two years past they have been runners-up, in 1909 being beaten by the narrow margin of four points.
The course, starting from the Show Grounds, consisted of one lap of the track and four laps of country composed of grass land and light plough. The feature of the race was the splendid "packing" of Wallasey, their success being assured from the commencement. E. Plant, the Wallasey postman, was expected to win but on the first lap he unfortunately got "stitch" and had to retire for a while. However, after a short rest, during which time all the others had got ahead, he felt better and very pluckily resumed, eventually finishing seventh. R. Young, Wallasey's champion, was the first to finish for the club, beating T. J. Brookes by a few yards, their relative positions being 3rd and 4th.
The result of the race was that Wallasey won handsomely, placing six men in the first nine, and totalling 37 points, while the second club, Richmond harriers, totalled 112 points. Each of Wallasey's six men will receive a gold centred medal, while the club will hold the "Courier and Express" Cup for twelve months. Mr. W. S. Brookes presented a medal to the seventh man finishing for the club, which was won by Secretary Scoins, who finished twelfth. Special mention should be made of the good running of Eric Fiuneirid and A. G. Scoins. Neither of these men had competed in a "district" race before, and to finish 17th and 18th respectively was indeed a creditable performance.
