Star Mersey duo on way to Brussels

Two local school pupils, Liverpool Pembroke Sefton's Jon Rice and Formby's Jenny Mockler, who recently switched to Sale Harriers, have a busy weekend ahead as they represent the North of England in the IAAF Cross Country International in Brussels. Travelling with the team will be Liverpool Pembroke Sefton's Robbie Wood, who is the Northern men's team manager. And he is Joined by clubmate Barbara Wood, who is now living in Cumbria and looks after the women's teams. This weekend's local interest is on club Christmas handicaps.

Wallasey jumped the gun last weekend and held their run and presentation at Harrison Drive baths. Melissa Franks was overall winner, with youngster Margaret McNellis second and Rolf Westrom third. There was a real battle next, with Peter Graham just getting the better of Dave Bond and Mark Ellis, with captain Mike Stanley recording the fastest lap.

Liverpool Pembroke Sefton host their three-mile event at West Derby Village Hall on Saturday at 2pm around the parkland of Croxteth Park. Members are asked to bring a prize. Wirral also host their event on Saturday at 2pm on the parkland behind Bebington Oval, with youngsters running one mile, women two miles and the juniors and seniors three miles. On Sunday, South Liverpool will run their event in a haze, after Saturday night's annual prizegiving. Nigel Grant will receive the Roadrunner of the Year prize, with the Veteran's Trophy going to Billy Fairylough. South stage Sunday's event at Clarke Gardens from 1p.m., starting and finishing near the Inn in the Park. Liverpool Harriers run their events around the inner paths of Wavertree Mystery. The events for women and girls are at 2pm. U-14 boys at 2.20 and the senior 2.8 mile event at 2.40 pm. Sunday morning also sees the first of three local open events, with the Hale 5 mile at 11a.m. The annual Speke 10k is on Boxing Day and details for both events is available from Ronnie Hart on 486 -9924 or 7430.
