
Three members of Britain's European Championships team in Belgrade last September fought out the finish of Salford Harriers' 7½-mile road race, yesterday, with Polytechnic marathan champion, Ron Hill, finishing on top.
His chief rivals were milers Brian Hall and Stan Taylor, but his stamina told, and he finished with an 18-second margin over Hall, with Taylor another eight seconds back.
Manchester Athletic Club man, John Lyons, led for the first 1½ miles with Hill lying back just behind the leading group. Then, as the field climbed out of the Irwell Valley, Hill raced up to join Hall and Brian Woolford at the head of the field.
Shortly after, Hill began to open a decisive gap, and Hall stayed on to beat Taylor for second place.
With Geoff Entwistle and Paddy Montague backing Hall up in fifth and sixth places, Manchester & District Lads' Club took the team award by seven points from Manchester Athletic Club, with Bolton third.. Details:
