Although he was out of the first nine in the Cheshire championships at Stockport, the 1962 champion, Martin Cranny, found himself included in the county team. He lost the soles of his shoes at half-way, and finished practically barefoot after being in fifth place when the accident occured.
Brilliant road runner Ron Barlow (Wallasey) had an easy individual win over miler Kevin Mather, and the shock here was that Barlow's usual shadow team-mate, Brian Woolford, finished a remote eighth.
With six men in the first ten places. Wallasey easily regained the team title from Wirral, and they appear to have found a sixth man in Townsend. They may yet become a serious proposition for the Northern championship.
