Taking the lead after two miles Brian Woolford (Wallasey A.C.) kept ahead of a large field to finish first in the H.S. Finney five-mile cross country race at Sherdley Park, St. Helens on Saturday.
Woolford was in the middle of the field after one mile but then moved up to take over the lead from club-mate Kevin Mather. Woolford ran on powerfully to increase his lead to fifty yards at the finish. John Delooze (Warrington A.C.) was second; D. Jeffs (Wirral A.C.) third, and Mather seventh.
Jeffs led the Wirral club to the team prize. D. Biddle (fourth) and J. Nunney (ninth) giving solid support.
The cold wind took its toll of runners but even so there were 105 finishers from a field of about 140.
In a three-mile youths' race, Sutton Harriers' John McLoughlin recorded yet another victory from Meldrum (Wallasey) and E. Connor (Liverpool).
Like McLoughlin, Warrington's Dave Brennan maintained his unbeaten record in cross-country racing this year. He outstripped the field in the boys' two-mile race.
