Woolford a Dangerous "Outsider"

Brian. Woolford, of Wallasey Athletic Club, the Cheshire runner whose fine performances in road racing have been a pleasing feature of the present season, will make a raid on a Lancashire preserve on Saturday at Morecambe in a bid to win the Red Rose open 20 miles road race.

Only once has this race been won by an'athlete from outside Lancashire.

Although he was runner-up in the Inter-Counties championship at this distance, a win at Morecambe by Woolford will be noted as his greatest performance, for the opposition includes such well known distance runners as Gerry North the English cross-country champion, who is travelling specially from London for the event, and the Olympic marathon runner, Peter Wilkinson, who will come from Chesterfield.

Last year's winner, Fred Howe, of Preston, who is also the Northern marathon champion, will be defending his title as Lancashire champion, for the county race is held in conjunction.

Teams have been entered by Bolton, Blackpool, Longwood, Leeds, Harehills, Barrow, Pembroke, and Leigh Harriers.

A notable, absentee will be the Pembroke champion, Jack Highton, but his club will be there with a team. The race will start on the Promenade at 2.30 p.m., and will be over a four-lap course of five-miles.
