Placing the first three runners in the Middleton 15¾-mile road race on Saturday, Wallasey Athletic Club failed to collect the team award because they had entered only as individuals.
Rochdale Harriers, who had three men in the first 11 places, took the team prize from Salford and Bolton.
The Wallasey runners, Ron Barlow, Brian Woolford and John Wright, dominated the race from the start and not until 12½ miles was there any appreciable break. Then Barlow made a determined burst and opened a lead which Woolford could not pull back over the last mile. Barlow clipped 27sec. off Fred Howe's course record and Woolford took five seconds off.
R. Barlow (Wallasey), 1hr. 21min. 15sec. 1; B. Woolford (Wallasey), 1-21-37, 2; J. Wright (Wallasey), 1-23-25, 3; D. Pilkington (Salford), 1-24-13, 4; J. Iddon (Bolton), 1-25-26, 5; A. Hughes (Rochdale), 1-24-46, 6.
