Hill Clips 27 Seconds Off Record

Ron Hill (Bolton U.H.), twenty-three-year-old Manchester University student, clipped 27 seconds off Fred Norris' 1960 course record when winning the ninth annual Pembroke twenty-mile road race at Huyton.

He also won the Northern individual title decided in conjunction with the open race and at the same time paved the way for his club to regain the open team honours from Blackpool.

Surprise of the race was Wallasey's Ron Barlow. With Hill he was with the leading group throughout. At fifteen miles Barlow and Hill were together, well clear of Fred Howe (Blackpool) and Brian Woolford (Wallasey).

Over the last five miles Hill piled on the pace and went on to win by 28 seconds.

There were 116 starters and 93 finished.
