Manchester Athletic Club visited Port Sunlight last week and pulled off a handsome win in the open six miles road race.
Counting - Peter Thompson 1, Stan Taylor 4, and Ron Carroll 6, they scored 11 points against Pembroke's 22, and Wirral's 31. Of particular interest was the excellent running of the winner who, unexpectedly, beat the more fancied Brian Woolford (Wallasey) by six seconds in 30 minutes 9 seconds. Another surprise too was R. K. Meadows (Sutton H.), who does most of his running these days with the Royal Navy. He finished third in 30 minutes 32 seconds, beating such as Taylor and Eddie Williams (Pembroke).
The three miles race for youths was won by the Wirral A.C. runner, J. Nunnen, in 14 minutes 42 seconds, John McLoughlin (Sutton Harriers), who won the Lancashire boys' championship in January, was second in 14 minutes 48 seconds, and Peter Chatterton (Waterloo) third, 14 minutes 54 seconds.
The team race was won by Wirral who in addition to the winner had D. Rimmer 4. and S. J. Drury 9, to score 14 points, beating Liverpool's three, W. Tone 5, A. Ryder 6. and D. Colman 11, 22 points. Waterloo Harriers were third. 25 points. Sutton 4th. 28 points, and Liverpool "B" 5th 46 points.
