Manchester A.C. provided the first man home, Peter Thompson, and with Dan Taylor and R. Carroll occupying fourth and sixth places, also took the senior team race in the Port Sunlight annual road races on Saturday.
For a long time Wallasey A. C's promising and consistent young runner, Brian Woolford, promised to add to his laurels with a win in the six miles. Thompson made the early pace with Woolford in close attendance and at the start of the last lap it was Woolford who was fractionally ahead and running strongly.
As local fans feared, it was Thompson who had the devastating finishing burst of speed to carry him clear on the long punishing run in to the line and although Woolford tried desperately to keep pace the Manchester man had a clear four seconds to spare with Meadows 150 yards further back.
