Brian Woolford, twenty-four-year-old member of Wallasey A.C. and one of Merseyside's best distance runners, will try his hand at a twenty mile race for the first time on May 26 when he runs in the annual "Pembroke 20" at Huyton.
He is not likely to win the open race but does hope to finish in the first six, which will give him a fine chance of taking the Cheshire title, which is being held in conjunction with the main event. If his time isn't outside one hour and fifty-three minutes he could also be chosen to represent Cheshire in the inter-counties' championship over twenty miles at the Whitsun British Games.
The open road race over an approximate 5¼ miles course held in preparation for next week's Manchester - Blackpool relay was a clear-cut victory for the Wallasey pair, Ron Barlow and Brian Woolford.
Open five miles road race: 1, R. Barlow (Wallasey A.C.) 27 mins. 17.5,secs; 2, B. Woolford (Wallasey A.C) 27 mins. 30 secs: 3. J. Highton (Pembroke) 28 mins. 4 secs.
