
Geoffrey North, of Blackpool, took full advantage of the absence of his elder brother Gerry in the nine miles West Lancashire Cross-Country Championship at Leyland, winning by sixteen seconds from his club-mate, the Lancashire county captain, Brian Craig.
Brian Woolford, of Wallasey A.C., the first Merseyside runner to finish, was third in the race in 48 minutes 6 seconds to North's 46 minutes 46 seconds. Blackpool and Fylde A.C. easily won the team event with 36 points; Pembroke were second with 137 points, and Wirral A.C. third with 156 points.
Merseyside fared better in the remaining three championships. Liverpool Harriers provided the individual winner, David Jenkins, and also the winning team in the junior race over six miles, and also won the boys' two miles team race, the individual winner in this being the Lancashire champion, John McLoughlin, of Sutton Harriers.
Peter Chatterton, of Waterloo Harriers, returned to his best form to win the youths' championship, whilst Wirral A.C. were easy winners of the team race, scoring 22 points.
Other local placings in the team championships were: Junior: Waterloo Harriers second, 50 points; Pembroke third, 65 points. Youths: Warrington A.C. second, 57 points; Liverpool Harriers third, 59 points. Boys: Sutton Harriers second, 25 points; Warrington A.C., 48 point
