With 95 finishers over Liverpool Harriers' course a Woolton Woods, the Live pool Cross-Country League got off to a good start. Brian Woolford (Wallasey A.C.),who has been doing so well over longer distances on the road, was first home, completing the five miles course in 28 minutes 42 seconds, a good furlong in front of the second runner to finish. Although run mostly over parkland, this course is quite stiff and hilly.
Pembroke, the League champions, had little difficulty in scoring, and finished as follows: 2, G. Warriner; 3, T. Dwyer; 5, E. Williams; 17, F. Wilson; 21, G. Ollson; 23, R. Williams; total, 71 points. Liverpool Harriers came Second with 125 points and then Liverpool University, competing in the League for the first time, filled third place with 204 points. Sutton Harriers followed in fourth place with 212 points, Wallasey A.C. 226 points, Port Sunlight A.C. 248 points.
About 40 turned out in the youths' race, over three miles, and this was won by J. McLoughlin, of Sutton, in 15 mins. 2 secs.
Next week at the same venue, Liverpool Harriers will be holding the Sangster and Booth Cup races and the Tryfan Trophy Competition. Entries, which are by invitation, are well up to previous years, and a number of schools will be able to field teams which competed in 1960.
