Pembroke A.C., Liverpool Cross-Country League champions last season, easily won the first race in the present series held over a five mile course at Woolton Woods on Saturday.
Liverpool Harriers were second and Liverpool University, making their debut in the League competition, third.
Wallasey A.C. were a man short, but one of their older members, Ramsay Hewson, an intended spectator, turned out in a borrowed track suit and his 95th position helped his team to finish fifth of the twelve teams engaged.
First man home was Brian Woolford (Wallasey A.C.) who led all the way to finish 200 yards ahead of Geoff Warriner and his Pembroke team-mate Terry Dwyer, who were only divided by inches.
