Wallasey Athletic Club member Brian Woolford has been chosen to represent England in the classic Kosice marathon, which is to be run in Czechoslovakia this weekend.
This honour came as no great surprise to Wallasey athletic enthusiasts, as, after having a successful season in 1962 when he first took seriously to road racing, Woolford entered this summer into a full road racing programme which brought him into competition with all the finest distance runners in Great Britain.
After competing successfully in 10 and 15 mile races in the early part of the season, he ran his first full marathon at Liverpool when he won the Northern Counties marathon championship in the distinctly national class time of 2 hours 23 minutes.
In this race he showed all the attributes of a top-class marathon runner, strength, determination and a fine judgment of pace, combination which he repeated a few weeks later when he ran into third place in the A.A.A. marathon championship at Coventry behind Brian Kilby (running in Tokyo this weekend) and Basil Heatley.
Woolford's success is the result of unremitting training and great single-mindedness of purpose over the past three or four years particularly - although he has been representing Wallasey A.C. since he ran as a youth in cross country championships over 10 years ago.
