Whelan stars for Wallasey

Wallasey Athletic Club travelled to Blackpool for the first round of the Northern League. Conditions were cold and wet with occasional bright patches provided by competing athletes.

Athletes who shone on the day were Steve Whelan who achieved victories in the high jump, long jump and triple jump, and only lost out on the Man of the Match award by in-form 5,000 meters expert Ken Moss of Chorley.

Steve was well supported by Dave Pendleton. Phil Cuthbert's victory in the 3,000 metres steeplechase was a mature performance from a 19-year-old recording his first victory in the Northern League. He backed this up with good runs in the 1,500 and 5,000 metres.

Again he was well supported in these three events by Bob Brimage. His brother, Alan, competed well in field events, winning the 'B' javelin, finding time for the 800m and a leg of the 4x100m.

Wallasey meet at Wallasey Rugby Club, Cross Lane on Mondays (7pm) and are looking for new members. Call at the club or ring Alan Johnson on 638 3435 for further information.
