A fair muster of runners turned out from Thorndale Farm on Saturday last, and in view of the proximity of the five mile handicap, coupled with the keen frosty weather, which made a smart pace necessary in order to keep warm, there was no slacking en route.
A fast and a slow pack were formed. F. W. Simmonds, of the latter, set a hot gait and maintained it to the finish over a course of about six miles, finishing comfortably first.
The five miles handicap is timed to start from headquarters at 3.30, trail layers to be ready at 3 p.m. prompt or earlier. As this is the first race since 1914 it is anticipated that a keen interest, will be taken in it by both past and present members.
