Following his run at Coventry recently when he took 3rd place in the A. A.A. marathon championship, Wallasey A.C. star Brian Woolford last Saturday won the Port Sunlight 15 mile race in a new record time of 77 minutes 4 secs. Brian was 50 yards clear at the top of the hill and running without any sign of weakening drew steadily away to win by over 300 yards with Sugden of Leeds in 3rd place.
Club secretary John Wright turned in a typical performance on very little prior training when he finished in 8th place after being well placed throughout.
Other Wallasey runners were Brian Chalton and Kevin Mather who completed 10 miles and John Young who ran splendidly in the top half of the held until fatigue forced his retirement at 14 miles.
Today Woolford has his last long distance commitment of the Summer when he travels to Morecambe to compete in the Red Rose 20-mile road race which always attracts a top-class entry and in which he was only narrowly beaten by international Gerry North last year.
