Members of Wallasey Athletic Club were competing in the second of the Northern Junior Track and Field League matches.
The venue was the Woodchurch Community Centre's track and eight clubs were competing:-
Liverpool Harriers, Warrington A.C., Stretford, Sutton, Liverpool Pembroke, Chester and Ellesmere Port, Wirral A.C. and Wallasey A.C.
To try to obtain as many points as possible, most of the clubs athletes found themselves in three or more events. Each club was allowed two athletes in each event. Perhaps performances were not up to expectations, but the heat must have had a hand in that coupled with the fact that many members were competing in events strange to them.
Rick Hemmings, recovered from a recent bout of 'flu, was rewarded by a personal best performance in his 7½lap 3000 metres, chopping 9 seconds off his previous best
Perhaps the biggest disappointment of the day was when Neil Tunstall was awarded 16 seconds for his 4th place in the 80m hurdles when he was clearly only two feet behind the third man so should have received more like 13.4secs. There was a feeling of contentment during the afternoon, not due to performances but due to the fact that Wallasey Athletic Club competed as a club team, boys and youths and not as a number of individuals. This is a clear indication of the renewed interest in athletics within the borough, despite the lack of proper facilities or even our own headquarters.
