Phil Truscott, Wallasey Athletic Club track captain, caused a major upset list Saturday at Hartford when he surprised the opposition and became the new holder of the Cheshire County 200 metres and long jump titles.
In the 200 metres he came from behind the holder, Brian Shuttleworth, in the closing stages and took the title from him in 23.9 sees. He won the long jump quite easily from Ian Robinson, of Wirral, with a leap of 5.80 metres.
It is thought that this must be just the first step towards a successful career in athletics for Phil, who has just started to feel the benefit of a stepped-up training programme.
Veteran Ramsey Hewson very sportingly answered the challenge of the 25 kilo-metres of hilly Manx roads in the International Veterans Championships.
He completed the gruelling course in 2 hours 41 minutes and 22 seconds, and earner 473rd, for which he received a medal.
At the other end of the scale the club's junior members were competing in the Wallasey Schools' Championships. It was noticeable that whenever athletic club members took part they lead the field and they must have beer gratified to realise that regular effort seems to pay off.
In the junior girls 100 metres Vivian Higginson came first in 13.6 seconds as did Jane Platt in the intermediate 100 metres in 13.5.
Helen Taylor won the intermediate 200 metres with a time of 28.2 sees and Julie Halfpenny won the senior 400 metres with a time of 66.6, while Susan Lloyd won the senior 800 metres in 2 minutes 40.4 seconds.
