Only a handful of Wallasey Athletic Club members took part in competitions last Saturday. Margaret Ashcroft, Janice Watts and Barbara Banks had been chosen, on their performances in the Northern League meetings, to represent the North in an inter-area match in Watford.
The Midlands, Greater London and Scotland were also represented in the first cross-country race of the season to bring the North and South together.
There were eight to count for the team race and the North were only three points behind Greater London, 87 to 90 points, when the positions were finally totted up.
The Wallasey girls finished in consecutive positions - Barbara Banks 12th; Janice Watts 13th and Margaret Ashcroft 14th - over a four-lap course with a steep hill.
Running on Epsom Downs on Saturday in an inter-departmental civil service meeting, Bob Brimage helped the Ministry of Defence to their third position. With internationals heading the field, Bob ran a very good race to come 19th, compared with his position of 30th last year. He covered the five mile course in a time of 28 minutes five seconds.
Today, Wallasey Athletic Club is holding its annual Christmas Handicap from the clubhouse. All members who are going to take part should be at the club at 2.15 p.m. and should bring a small prize with them.
