Athletic Club star, 21 year-old Barbara Banks, has been chosen as Wallasey's Sports Personality of 1968 for her outstanding performances in cross-country and athletics.
Barbara was the Northern cross-country junior champion, runner-up in the Northern cross-country senior championship the Cheshire County half
mile champion and in a 3,000 metre track race which she won in a time of 10 mins. 6.2 secs. was regarded at that time as a world best performance.
Barbara is a first-class sportswoman, and did, in fact, travel to Mexico to watch the Olympic Games, where she also assisted in the training with some of Britain's best athletes.
Arrangements will be made for the presentation to her of the Marples Trophy by the Rt. Hon. Ernest Marples, M.P.; in the near future.
