Last Saturday, Wallasey A.C. took 32 members to Wigan for an inter club match involving eight clubs and on a cool and overcast afternoon were placed third with a combined total of 66½ pts.
Amongst Wallasey's winner were Margaret Ashcroft in the 220 who was followed home by Barbara Banks in 2nd place. Mike Teehan led all the way in the junior 440 but with 60 yards to go he 'tied up' and appears to need over-distance work, John Morley was never challenged in the senior 440 and led all the way to the tape in 53.5 secs, whilst young Ian Wilson gave a glimpse of better things to come with a great run of 56.3
The club's sprinters were next into action and following a spirited 2nd place in the junior 100 in 11 secs. by Tony Parry, Mal Dunn won his race in 10.9. These two combined with Mike Teehan and Robin Tarrant in the 4x110 yards junior relay, and despite dropping the baton at the first changeover, finished a close 2nd to Salford A.C. Ian Wilson completed a double by winning the boys under 14 100 yards in 11.5 secs., and Kevin Mather ran a well judged race to take the Senior 880 in 2 mins2.5 secs.
Whilst Wallasey's runners were fighting it out on the track their field events squad were piling up the points in the throwing and jumping events: Rob Williamson and Alan Hess placed 1st and 2nd respectively in the javelin with throws of 136 ft 6 ins and 135 ft 9 ins, and Robin Tarrant was third in the long jump with 17ft 9½ ins. Carl Gee won the senior discus with 113 ft 10 ins and was 2nd in both the shot with 39 ft 3 ins, and high jump with 5 ft 2 ins, Sandra Gill jumped 13 ft 7 ins, to take 3rd in the girls long jump and our senior girls were placed 2nd and 3rd in the ladies' 880 yds.
With 62 events completed in the afternoon, the programme was considered by many observers to be 'top heavy' some athletes competing in six events, to the detriment of their own specialties. Wigan was placed 1st club with 151 pts, Cheadle 2nd, 93 pts and Wallasey 3rd with 66½ pts.
New members will be welcome On Monday or Thursday evenings 7-9 p.m. Saturday 2-5 p.m.
