Last Saturday saw the annual Waterloo Road Race being run over 6¾ miles of Waterloo roads. The inhabitants of Waterloo must have been surprised at seeing about two hundred runners in gaily coloured vests racing past their houses.
This race is now recognised as a one of the major road races in the North of England. Indeed the meeting this year attracted some 250 entries from clubs all over the North and also gave the spectators a chance of seeing some of the best distance runners in the North.
The race for first place developed into a tussle between Fred Norris and Alan Cocking but the greater experience of Norris enabled him to forge ahead over the last mile and win comfortably by about three hundred yards while also breaking the course record.
Bolton United Harriers won the team race once again with first, third and tenth placings, giving them a total of 14 pts. Manchester A.C. were second with 33 pts. and Liverpool Pembroke third with a total of 40 pts.
Wallasey had 9 runners entered and had the distinction of having all of their runners completing the course. Brian Woolford was their first counter in 63rd position, John Ryan and Bill Farrell were the other team counters in 90th and 101st positions respectively. These were followed by Colin Harris, 105th, E. Davies 115th, Ray Scammell 125th, Ramsey Hewson 133rd and Harry Lutas 135th.
Today (Saturday 19th) is the Wallasey Athletic Club's first home league fixture when they are hosts to Sefton Harrier's and Sutton Harriers.
