24 October 1964 (New)   Ron Barlow wins first mob run
Last Saturday's senior mob run at Woolton over Liverpool Harriers' 5¼ mile course saw Barlow of Wallasey Athletic Club first man home in 28 minutes 50 seconds. The course was firm without being too hard although there were one or two slippery patches.

Ron Barlow had a very good run over the 6-mile course at Sherdley Park to win comfortably for Wallasey A.C., John Wright improved his previous week's performance by finishing 4th, David Field and Mark Aldridge brought up the Wallasey contingent in 37th and 42nd positions respectively.

Running in fine style, Ron Barlow won the St. Asaph-Rhyl road race quite convincingly with a strong burst over the last mile. He was in the leading group right from the start, and led for the last 2 miles but it was not until his last mile burst that he consolidated his position.

Ron Barlow upheld the name of Wallasey Athletic Club last Saturday by winning the 8¼ mile Windermere to Kendal Road Race. He was with the leading group until near the end, when he strode ahead to record a time of 40 minutes 42 seconds.

Last Saturday's attempt at the World 10-mile record at Kirkby was doomed before it had startled. The strong cross-wind ruled out any chance of a new record being established although the strength of Hill's opposition ensured that it would be a fast race for the conditions.

Following his personal-best time of 4 mins. 35 secs., in the Liverpool Parks championships on Tuesday evening last week, Barrie Smith gave a repeat performance in winning his heat at Port Sunlight Oval the next day with a 4:35.4 mile, then took the 880 yards in another best time of 2 mins 4.1 secs.

Competing in the National standards meeting at Warrington last Saturday, Wallasey's Dave Lockley underlined his promise in the 1,000 metres steeplechase by gaining a Grade I standard with a time of 2 mins. 58.5 secs, and in doing so was only 1 tenth of a sec. off the track record.

Next Saturday at Lingham Park Track, Wallasey Athletic Club will attempt to beat the time of 19 mins. 20 secs. for the 4 x' 1 mile youths' relay race.
