Club Race Reports Season 2021-2022
Borders League
Race 1 - Delamere - 17/10/2021 - Seniors
After a hiatus of 18 months Borders League racing returned at Delamere Forest, the 5.8 mile three-lap course which consisted of the main loop of the Delamere Park Run around Blakemere Moss, the course was off road but on a predominately hard surface. Joe Boden wasted no time establishing a lead on the first lap and continued to build on this as he ran out a winner in 30:05, a great run and Joe was 42 seconds ahead of the runner up . The men's team finished third on the day and the other counters were Jack Poland (17th), Chris Jones (19th), Rob Pearse (21st), Luke Hampshire (26th), Ray Clark (31st), debutant Daniel Anderson (32nd), Mike Jones (37th), Matt Gillbanks (62nd) and Tony Barbat (94th).
Vicky McConnell led the ladies home finishing 11th, Vicky was supported by Becky Blacklock (12th), Sallie Holt (16th) and Jan McArd (24th). 44 runners represented the club and there were category wins for Joe and Sallie.
Race 2 - Capenhurst - 14/11/2021 - Seniors
Two minutes silnce was impecably observed prior to the second Borders League race at Capenhurst on Rememberance Sunday. The course was an accurately measured 5 miles and the race took place under sunny skies. Joe Boden led from gun to tape and finished in 24:54 averaging 4:59 per mile, an outstanding run. This was Joe's sixth Borders League individual race win, in the team race Wallasey AC were pushed into second place by Buckley by 13 points. Other counters for the men were debutant Edd Flynn (7th), debutant Ryan Greenwood (15th), Jack Poland (21st), Oliver Chadwick (28th), Rob Pearse (34th), Chris Jones (37th), Ray Clark (39th), Steve Brealey (40th), John Thelwell (42nd). Jan McArd put in a captain's performance as she led the ladies home in 29th. The ladies team finished in fifth place and Jan was assisted by Vicky McConnell (30th), Aimee Bartley (39th) and Michelle Alty (43rd). Men's captain Dave Walton said "Fantastic day on Sunday at the 2nd Borders league race of the season at Capenhurst. Men finished in a very close 2nd place and Ladies finished in 5th place.
Joe Boden again won the race with a course record ! An outstanding performance from an outstanding athlete . The men had 10 scorers in 42 and 20 in 96 a remarkable achievement well done. Jan McArd also had a storming race and was first scorer for the ladies well done indeed.The highlight of the day for me was Wallasey had 63 runners absolutely brilliant overall team effort and everyone contributes to a special team. I am proud to be part of Wallasey AC."
Race 3 - Birkenhead Park - 05/12/2021 - Seniors
The third Borders League race took place at Birkenhead Park. Joe Boden recorded his third consecutive Borders League win with an excellent run. This was Joe's seventh Borders League individual race win, in the team race Wallasey AC scored a win with a season low total of 220 points. Other counters for the men were Edd Flynn (4th), Jack Poland (11th), Oliver Chadwick (14th), Rob Pearse (17th), Chris Jones (22nd), Jay Walker (28th), debutant Paul Skipper (31st), Ray Clark (34th) and Matt Gillbanks (59th). The ladies team finished in fourth place with Becky Blacklock (20th), Jan McArd (29th), Katherine Andrews (31st) and Bella Cuthbert (36th). Men's captain Dave Walton said "Wow what a fantastic day for Wallasey AC at the Borders league yesterday. We had a large field of 53 runners who all contributed to the performance of the team.
Joe Boden was the overall winner for the 3rd consecutive race this year with another course record. He is a superb athlete and we are lucky to have him. He inspires the whole club to improved performances. The men finished in 1st place by a massive 149 points well done to all. A brilliant achievement. You have made a past it runner very happy indeed. The ladies finished in a very competitive 4th place with Becky, Jan, Katherine and Bella in the scoring team."
Race 4 - Kelsterton - 27/02/2022 - Seniors
Joe Boden stormed to victory in the fourth Borders League race held at Kelsterton. Joe broke the course record on the 4.3 mile route that takes in a long climb during the second mile. Joe led the men's team to victory in the team race with other counters being Edd Flynn (10th), Jack Poland (12th), Ryan Greenwood (13th), Oliver Chadwick (16th), Rob Pearse (19th), Luke Hampshire (24th), John Thelwell (26th), Ray Clark (38th) and Mike Jones (50th). The ladies finished in fifth place with counters being Bella Cuthbert (26th), Jan McArd (27th), Elaine Opara (28th) and Jane Brealey (34th). The men's team lead the league by 62 points and the ladies are in fifth place.
Race 5 - Mold - 27/03/2022 - Seniors
The fifth Borders League race of the season clashed with Mother's Day and the Northern Road Relays and as a result the number of finishers was down to 218. The men's team continued their attempt to retain the title with a second place finish. The club were led home by Ryan Greenwood who finished in an excellent fourth place, not far behind were Olly Chadwick (7th) and Rob Pearse (8th). Other counters were Chris Jones (18th), Ben McGee (24th), Mike Jones (27th), Matt Gillbanks (42nd), Tony Barbat (71st), Mike Dyson (75th) and Dermot Gough (77th). The ladies finished in fourth place and the counters were Jan McArd (15th), Elaine Opara (24th), Jane Brealey (26th) and Vicky Kehoe (28th). Joe Boden, Rob Pearse and Tony Barbat currently lead their age categories in the individual standings.
Race 6 - Tattenhall - 10/04/2022 - Seniors
The sixth fixture in the 2021-2022 Borders League series took place at Tattenhall on a 6 mile course. Joe Boden led the Wallasey AC men's team to victory in the race with his fifth individual win of the season. This means that Joe has won the senior men's title with a race to spare. Other counters for the men were Edd Flynn (4th), Jack Poland (7th), Olly Chadwick (8th), Rob Pearse (17th), Ryan Greenwod (20th), Chris Jones (26th), Tom Gillbanks (35th), Luke Hampshire (43rd) and Matt Gillbanks (57th). The ladies finished in fifth position and the counters were Becky Blacklock (18th), Jan McArd (24th), Vicky Kehoe (28th) and Sue Reynolds (36th). Men's captain Dave Walton said "Well done everyone at Borders League today brilliant performances throughout ladies and men. Proud to be part of Wallasey AC."
Race 7 - Birkenhead Park - 11/05/2022 - Seniors
Wallasey AC men's team were confirmed winners of the Borders League for 2021-2022 after winning the final fixture of the season. Joe Boden led the team home in second place and the race capped an outstanding season for Joe who had five wins and course records to his credit and Joe also won the men's individual trophy and the senior men's title. Other counters for the men were Jack Poland (7th), Olly Chadwick (8th), Rob Pearse (16th), Chris Jones (22nd), Mike Jones (31st), Tom Kennedy (44th), Paul Skipper (46th), Matt Gillbanks (60th) and Luke Watson (63rd). The ladies finished in fifth place on the day and fourth place overall. Counters were Becky Blacklock (18th), Jan McArd (20th), Elaine Opara (26th) and Jane Brealey (36th). There were individual age category medals for Rob Pearse first V45, Tony Barbat first V60, Mary Rees second V65, Matt Gillbanks third V50 and Sue Reynolds third V45. There were also some strong performances in the overall individual results with Jan McArd 17th lady, Olly Chadwick 8th, Jack Poland 9th, Rob Pearse 15th and Chris Jones 20th.
Liverpool & District XC Union
Championships - Clarke's Garden - 06/03/2022 - Seniors
Wallasey AC ladies returned with silver medals from the Liverpool & District Cross Country Union Championships held at Clarke's Garden. Becky Blacklock had a great run finishing as second lady and the team of Becky, Jan McArd and Elaine Opara finished as second team. The men finished in fifth place with Jack Poland (7th), Rob Pearse (13th), Tony Barbat (43rd), Phil Cuthbert (45th), Mike Dyson (55th) and Paul Johnstone (61st) counting. Club cross country champions are Becky and Jack. The 5.4 mile course was changed to avoid the top field and the muddy section due to a fallen tree and consisted of four laps.
Cross Country Championships
Merseyside - Sherdley Park - 08/01/2022 - Under 17 Men
The under 17 men's team picked up a bronze medal at the Merseyside Cross Country Championships held at Sherdley Park, St. Helens. The counting team were Aiden Hampson (11th), Josh Wild (12th), Jack Yang (13th) and Ben Sharp (14th).
Merseyside - Sherdley Park - 08/01/2022 - Under 20 Men
Sam Jackson finished tenth in the under 20 men's race at the Merseyside Cross Country Championships held at Sherdley Park, St. Helens.
Merseyside - Sherdley Park - 08/01/2022 - Ladies
The ladies finished fifth at the Merseyside Cross Country Championships held at Sherdley Park, St. Helens. The counters for the ladies were Becky Blacklock (8th), Jan McArd (32nd), Helen Simpson (34th), and Michelle Alty (36th). Mary Rees was first in her age category.
Merseyside - Sherdley Park - 08/01/2022 - Seniors
The men's team grabbed a bronze medal at the Merseyside Cross Country Championships held at Sherdley Park, St. Helens. The counting team were Oliver Chadwick (7th), Ryan Greenwood (8th), Jack Poland (17th), Dan Anderson (20th), Rob Pearse (28th) and Tony Barbat (62nd).
Northern - Pontefract - 29/01/2022 - Ladies
The Northern Cross Country Championships were held at Pontefract Racecourse. The skies were clear but the wind was gusting up to 50mph. The ladies' course consisted of two laps and was 5.5 miles, half a mile over length. Captain Jan McArd led the team home in 173rd place. Other counters were Helen Simpson (189th), Michelle Alty (195th) and Caet Cuthbert (257th). this left the team in 30th place. Mary Rees ran without a chip so was not recorded.
Northern - Pontefract - 29/01/2022 - Seniors
The Northern Cross Country Championships were held at Pontefract Racecourse. The skies were clear but the wind was gusting up to 50mph. The men's course consisted of three laps and was 8.4 miles, nearly a mile over length. Numbers were down with only 517 finishers, Ryan Greenwood led the team home in a very impressive 65th place, not far behind was Oliver Chadwick in 84th. Other counters were Jack Poland (147th), Rob Pearse (163rd), Chris Jones (172nd), and Dan Anderson (185th), this left the team in 13th place a great result.
National - Parliament Hill, London - 26/02/2022 - Senior Men
Dan Anderson competed in the National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields. Dan finished the 7.5 mile course in 54:06 for 620th place.
National - Parliament Hill, London - 26/02/2022 - Senior Women
Michelle Alty and Jan McArd travelled to London for the National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill Fields. Michelle and Jan recorded the same time of 45:49 with Michelle just edgding Jan on the finish line.
Wirral Multi Terrain Series
Race 1 - Royden Park - 07/09/2021 - Seniors
The first multi terrain race of 2021 took place on a pleasant evening at Royden Park, the couse was a lap of the starter's field and two laps over and around Thursaston Common. Wallasey men finished second on the night with counters being Oliver Chadwick (5th) making a fine debut, Jack Poland (10th), Luke Hampshire (12th), Chris Jones (13th) and Rob Pearse (28th). The ladies finished eighth on the night with Vicky MConnell (15th), Michelle Alty (35th) and Joniece Thompson (41st) counting. William Hampshire finished 11th in the under 15 boys.
Race 2 - Thurstaston - 14/09/2021 - Seniors
The second race of the series took place at Thurstaston in the Wirral Country Park. The course consisted of two loops of the beach and the Wirral Way. The men finished in second place on the night and counters were Chris Jones (5th), Jack Poland (9th), Rob Pearse (10th), Ray Clark (14th) and Mike Jones (37th). The ladies finished eleventh with Jan McArd (29th), Michelle Alty (33rd) and Joniece Thompson (41st) counting.
William Hampshire finished eighth in the under 15 boys.
Race 3 - Harrison Drive - 21/09/2021 - Seniors
Wallasey AC hosted the third multi terrain race at Harrison Drive, the course was out and back along the beach and around the trails at the Gun Site. On a beautiful sunny evening the club turned out in large numbers as both runners and officials with 25 men and 15 women finishing the race. The men finished second on the night and counters were Chris Jones (5th), Jack Poland (6th), Rob Pearse (9th), Luke Hampshire (10th) and Ray Clark (14th). The ladies finished seventh with Vicky McConnell (20th), Joniece Thompson (33rd) and Michelle Alty (34th) counting.
Race 4 - Arrowe Park - 28/09/2021 - Seniors
The final race of the multi terrain league took place at Arrowe Park, the course was a lap of the field followed by two laps of the park starting by the swings and finishing by the pitch and putt course. The men finished second on the night and second overall. Counters were Luke Hampshire (10th), Rob Pearse (11th), John Thelwell (12th), Chris Jones (13th) and Steve Brealey (15th), John Thelwell arrived after the start and worked his way through the field. The ladies finished sixth on the night and eighth overall (sixth A team) with Vicky McConnell (12th), Joniece Thompson (33rd) and Jan McArd (35th) counting. Individual medals were won by Bella Cuthbert third female under 17, Michelle Alty third female over 50, Luke Hampshire second male under 20, Chris Jones second male under 40, Jack Poland third male under 40 and Rob Pearse second male over 40.
Christmas Handicap
Christmas Handicap - Wallasey Shore - 19/12/2021 - Seniors
The Christmas Handicap took place on a cold and misty morning. First to emerge from the fog and take the ladies title was Sandra Riley in 25:49, this was 30 seconds ahead of runner-up and male winner Aiden Hampson. Will Hampshire picked up the junior award. Fastest lady was Bella Cuthbert with 17:59 and fastest male was Oliver Chadwick in a remarkable 13:11. Men's captain Dave Walton said "Well done everyone who were involved with the Club Handicap race today. It was a real team effort and great day for Wallasey AC. We had 42 runners and 10 supporters to make to make a real social and enjoyable event well done all."
