Oxford defeated Cambridge by seven events to four in the Inter-Varsity Freshmen's athletic sports, held last Saturday at Fenner's Field, Cambridge. Two of the Oxford victories were secured by A. Pennington (Berkhamsted and Hertford, Oxford), who was successful in the 100 yards and the 440 yards.
The young athlete, who thus adds to his many successes, is the son of Councillor John Pennington, J.P., Leader of the Wallasey Town Council.
E. A. Montague, "The Manchester Guardian" commentator, said of him:
"As had been expected, A. Pennington quite outshone all the other competitors. It had been thought that in the 100 yards he might be hard pressed by both Cambridge men. In the event, after remaining as steady as a rock through two false starts, he got away beautifully and never looked like being beaten. He is much steadier than he was six months ago, and his smooth, balanced style showed up the crudities of C. E. Johnson, who tied himself into knots in his efforts to produce speed, and as a result was passed near the finish by his own second string. In the quarter Pennington completely out-classed everybody and it will be extremely interesting to see what he makes of A. G. K. Brown in the relay match on November 30th, it they start more or less together."
