The Glasgow - Edinburgh Ultra Marathon follows the course of the Forth & Clyde and Union canals and takes in the Antonine Wall and the Falkirk Wheel before leading competitors into the heart of Edinburgh. Martin Connell finished in 9 hours 34 minutes and after the race said "Glasgow to Edinburgh ultra 55 miles completed in 9h34. Tough though, much more than I expected. Relentless especially second half, no hills on the entire route, and all flat tarmac, gravel, hard track and surprising amount of muddy trail along canal paths and under bridges. Quads, knees all taking constant hit in same places. First half easy miles 8-8:30mm, through marathon distance in sub 4hrs and 50% of race length in 4:12 even doing steady run walk with two guys I met Steve Pascale-Jones and David Allan. Second half, maybe the toughest of any event I've done. Sick, couldn't eat anything around mile 35, (not even cake) and vomited with 20-22 miles plus to go. 20+ miles on electrolyte, great training but running on zero, just fat stores seriously hard. Toughest race ever? Maybe. Great days training though."
