During the 4th annual Cheshire County Athletic Championships at Port Sunlight Oval last Saturday afternoon, Len Platt, of Wallasey Athletic Club and Cheshire, set up new figures for the long jump with a leap of 22ft 2in., beating his own previous best championship performance by 1ft. 8in.
Platt also equalled his own county record figures for the hop, step and jump at 43ft. 10½ in. (which co-incidentally is also the distance he covered when he took second place in the Inter-Counties contest at the White City recently), and took second place in the high jump, clearing 5ft. 5in.
Matt Smith of Wallasey Athletic Club was also successful gaining first place in both the sprint high hurdles and the pole vault, as well as third place in the high jump.
Other members of W.A.C. who were placed in their events included Barney Kivlin, third to the long jump and second in hop, step and jump, John Prydderch, third in the 100 yards, Ted Bollard, second in pole vault, John McFarland, third in the three miles. Bob Fullerton, third in the junior 440 yards and Eric Foster third in the ¼ mile low hurdles.
Of the Wallasey girls, second place was gained by Margaret Collings, in the 100 yards, Penny Price was third in the 100 yards and Mavis Ashworth, second in the high jump. Penny Price was also second in the new Royal Iris Trophy 100 metre event.
In their first North West Counties Weight Lifting League match at Garston last month, the W.A.C. beat teams from Garston Boys Club and Bolton United Harriers. Their match tomorrow is against Crosby and Stamford at Crosby.
