Wallasey athletes were well to the fore in the Cheshire County Championships at Port Sunlight Oval on Saturday, winning the 120 yards hurdles, the long jump (a record),
the hop, step and jump, and the pole jump, and gaining places in other events.
M. W. Smith won the 120 yds. hurdles in 17.3 secs., D. Ryan (Manchester University) being second. He also won the pole jump (9 ft.). E. J. Bollard of Wallasey being second, and he was third in the high jump. L. H. Platt with a long jump of 22ft. 2ins. broke the record for this event, another Wallasey athlete B. Kivlin, being third. Platt also won the hop, step and jump (43ft. 10½ins., equal to the record), Kivlin being second.
In the three woman's events Wallasey contestants gained third in each. Penny Price, who last year lost the 100 yards by a few inches, was second in the 100 metres; the new trophy, the Royal Iris Trophy, being won by N. Abrams (Liverpool H. & A.C.). M. C. Collings was beaten by M. Green (Manchester) in the 100 yards, and in the high jump M. Ashworth was beaten by D. Potter of Stockport.
Other local athletes who figured in the events were J. H. McFarland (Wallasey A.C.) 3rd in the three miles; E. C. Foster, 3rd in the 440 yards hurdles; R. H. Owen (Wallasey A.C.) 3rd in the javelin throwing; R. Fullerton (Wallasey A.C.) 3rd in the 440 yards junior.
