With a team greatly depleted by illness, Wallasey Athletic Club were beaten by Wirral A.C. over the 4¾ miles course at Wallasey last Saturday.
Two members of the Club's best six runners were able to turn out. They were J. Edwards, the Club captain, and R. Young, Jnr., who had a difficult time with the big Wirral pack. Edwards failed by a mere few yards to record his fourth successive inter-club first place. He was beaten in the last 50 yards by K. Hall, a most promising runner. R. Young, Jnr., ran well to take 7th place after his great win in the Christmas Handicap two weeks ago. Denis Kelly made his best time over the course with R. Hubbard, still improving, close behind, A. Simpson and G. Mason both excelled themselves to complete the team six, which although defeated was by no means disgraced.
To-day the New Year Handicap, will be run off at Wallasey. All runners start together and have their handicap allowances deducted after the completion of the race.
