The opening meeting of the season of the Liverpool & District Cross-country Association was held on Saturday, at Ormskirk, when 225 runners representing 22 clubs, started off shortly after four o'clock for a six mile spin, followed by a mile race.
After an enjoyable run across fields and byways, the harriers stopped for their mile break. The seniors were first, and a very close and fast race resulted in the following placings :- 1, James Roberts, Sefton Harriers; 2. A. G. Roberts, Sefton Harriers; 3, H. H. Fleetwood, Sefton Harriers. Homecroft supplied men for the eight and fourteenth place, which is dissicorly meritorious having regard to the proportions of the gathering. The juniors started five minutes later, and a splendid race ended as follows:- 1, R Young. Wallasey Harriers; 2, Garnett, St. Joseph's, St. Helens; 3. Flynn, Sacred Heart; 4, Millingson, Cowley Harriers; 5. Cummings, North Liverpool Gymnasium; 6, Hanmer, Wallasey Harriers. As may be noticed, the Wallasey Harriers supplied the first and sixth men home, and as this is the club's first season, also the first year in which any club representing Wallasey has taken part in this important event, the excellent performance is doubly gratifying.
The Wallasey Harriers meet at Oarside Farm each Saturday at 3:30, unless otherwise advertised, and a hearty invitation will be accorded to newcomers and visitors. Application for membership may be sent to R Young, 19, Devonshire Road, Liscard.
The season may now be said to be in working order. The fixture card of this club has already been issued, and includes inter-club runs with Liverpool Oddfellows, Richmond, North Liverpool Gymnasium and Pembroke: besides which there are local 'Derbies' with Wallasey Harriers, and a run and match with their own Y.M.C.A. Football Club. The races for members include handicaps at distances of three, five, and seven miles. There will also be Christmas handicap and a Club Championship with a sealed handicap. The club will also enter a team for the Liverpool & District.
