As anticipated, Homecroft had a tough struggle with North Liverpool Gymnasium at the Hermitage last Saturday. A course of about six and a half miles was taken over rather heavy country with additional obstacles in wind and rain.
This distance brought the teams to the mile break, where they lined up for the burst home. The race did not present any exciting features, Gilbertson immediately taking the lead and winning comfortably without being challenged. There was evidence of improvement in Jones and Mole, of Homecroft, whose rapid advance in the club placings week by week have been most marked. The actual result, which shows a win for Homecroft by six points, is as follows :-
Homecroft. - J. B. Barley 2, T. Swan 3, J. D. Jones 4, G. Mole 5, W. S. Brookes 10, S. B. Brookes 12; total 36.
N.L.G.H. - J. S. Gilbertson 1, R. Cummings 6, M. Shipley 7, J. Martin 8, J. Heyton 9, H. Bray 11; total 42.
Last Tuesday another event which created great interest locally, was the race between the harriers and footballers of the Y.M.C.A.
It will be remembered that in the football match the latter won by seven goals against two. A short course of about four miles was taken, and then the teams lined up by Molyneux-drive to race the last mile. The harriers were bent on getting their own back, and they did so, eventually winning by 26 points.
To-day, Homecroft will take an easy run over the course which is to be traversed in the Club championship next Saturday. That event is causing great excitement in the Club, over forty members are eligible to compete, and the chief attraction of the race undoubtedly lies in the glorious uncertainty of the result.
