Wallasey Athletic Club gained an overwhelming victory on Saturday, placing the first seven men to beat Liverpool University H. by 67 points, at Wyncote.
In many ways the result was indicative of the club's advance this season, for its members will not easily forget their last visit to the University ground two years ago. On that occasion W. R. Richardson and N. J. Neale, then at the top of their form, romped home into the first two places, but the 3rd Wallasey man could finish no higher than 15th; the University in them meantime finishing their whole team to win the race.
Since then the packing of the team has improved out of all recognition, and on the fast 4½ miles course only J. Westmore and T. Goodman offered any opposition to the Wallasey team and even they were unable to finish in the first six.
B. Morgan took the individual honours, winning from T. B. Calveley and W. R. Richardson in the final sprint. N. Marples was 4th, F. G. Ambrose 5th, L. Bell 6th and K. Baird 7th. In addition, Wallasey had three other runners, A. Calveley, J. Cousins and W. A. Geddes, all well placed in the first twenty.
The best performance of the day was undoubtedly that of N. Marples, a new recruit who finished 4th. If the latter fulfils the promise shown he should shine in the Youths' Championships next season as he is still very young.
Results as follows:-
Wallasey A.C. - B. Morgan, 1; T. B. Calveley, 2; W. R. Richardson, 3; N. Marples, 4; F. G. Ambrose, 5; L. Bell, 6; total, 21 points.
LIVERPOOL UNIVERSITY H. - J. Westmore, 8; T. Goodman, 12; H. Hanney, 13; W. Cook, 15; P. Haigh, 18; T. Anthony, 22; total, 88 points.
