Wallasey Athletic Club had two teams entered in the district championships held last Saturday at Port Sunlight.
The chief feature of the afternoon's sport from the club's standpoint was the brilliant running of T. B. Calveley, who finished 4th in the Junior Championship in a field of 80. He was awarded the medal for the first man home of an unplaced team. As he had previously beaten the winner, L. Craine, of Boundary H., in inter-club engagements earlier in the season, it is quite possible that Calveley may yet reverse Saturday's result when the pair meet again in the West Lancashire County Championships held a week to-day at Makerfield.
The team (Junior) finished 5th with a total of 154 points; the final placings being: Pembroke A.C. 1st, Liverpool University 2nd, Boundary H. 3rd, Wirral A.C. 4th, Wallasey A.C. 5th, Liverpool A.C. 6th, Sefton H. 7th, and North Liverpool Gym H. 8th.
B. Morgan (16th) and K. Baird (4th) ran well for the club, the former going through the field at a great pace on the second lap. H. Jones (35th), F. G. Ambrose (40th) and R. Leach (41st) completed the team.
The Seniors were not so successful and failed to finish a full team, as only four of the nine starters completed the course.
They were unfortunate, however, in that the intended distance of 9 miles was increased to almost 11½ miles and this more than any factor contributed to their defeat.
L. Bell (30th) and W. R. Richardson (33rd) both ran well on the first two laps, but the distance beat them and they fell away badly in the last two miles.
W. A. Geddes (42nd) continues his improved form and had the satisfaction of finishing 3rd for his club, a short distance ahead of J. Davies (43rd), who was the only other Wallasey runner to complete the distance.
S. Dodd, the Wirral international, won the Senior event for the seventh successive year, while Pembroke A.C. continued their sequence of victories in the team races with a fourth successive win.
There will be a training run to-day from the Leasowe-road headquarters for those not competing in the District Cross-Country Handicap to be held from last week's championship venue at Port Sunlight.
The hon. secretary, Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14 Cromer-drive, will be pleased to supply information re the club's activities to any prospective member.
