The club held a very successful handicap last Saturday over a 7½ miles course, trail being laid by F. G. Ambrose, J. Edwards, and N. Marples, a new member.
The only unfortunate incident was that one member, off a long start, lost the trail somewhere between Upton and Moreton and the backmarkers following in the wake of the erring member cut the intended course by about half a mile.
W. A. Geddes off 5 minutes and J. Crompton off 5¼ minutes, who have both shown considerably improved form this season, ran into the lead near Moreton and at one time it looked as though the pair would easily finish 1st and 2nd. The scratch man, T. B. Calveley, however, ran a brilliant race and only just failed to annex first place.
He split the leading pair on Leasowe-road, finishing 2nd to W. A. Geddes with G. Crompton 3rd. The latter had to run hard in the concluding stages of the race to keep in front of K. Baird, who is now at the top of his form.
The limit man, R. G. Hyde, lost some ol the advantage of his long start of 12 minutes owing to the majority of the competitors inadvertently clipping the course as previously stated. The remark applies to C. Simmonds off 8¾ mins, and accounts for both finishing so far back
W. R. Richardson and B. Morgan, both on the scratch mark, with T. B. Calveley, gained several places but never got within striking distance of the leaders.
