Pembroke A.C., holders of the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Championship, were at full strength for their home match with Wallasey A.C. and Pilkington Recs A.C. over a 6½ miles course at Litherland last Saturday.
They placed the first four men and the 6th to win the team race (first five counting from each team) with a total of 16 points against Wallasey's 64 points and Pilkington's 109 points.
The club, although no match for the home team, had the satisfaction of beating Pilkington A.C. for the 2nd place by the very convincing margin of 45 points.
T. B. Calveley, the club's most consistent runner this season, gave another fine performance in finishing 5th. B. Morgan, after holding 3rd position for several miles, fell away in the later stages of the race and eventually finished 10th. The latter must try and develop better judgment of pace, as lack of this has nullified many of his best efforts this season.
K. Baird (13th) ran consistently well throughout and it was only in the last mile that his club mate, L. Bell (11th) managed to overhaul him. W. R. Richardson (25th) completed Wallasey's first five, while W. A. Geddes, J. Davies and J. Edwards aided materially in pegging back Pilkington's last counting man.
Results as follows :-
Pembroke A.C. - W. Thomson, 1st; N. Jones, 2nd; H. Ireland, 3rd; W. Roberts, 4th; J. Johnstone, 6th. Total, 16 points.
Wallasey A.C. - T. B. Calveley, 5th; B. Morgan, 10th; L. Bell, 11th; K. Baird, 13th; W. R. Richardson, 25th. Total, 64 points.
PILKINGTON RECS A.C. - W. Stout, 7th; H. Jackson, 21st; H. Critchley, 23rd ; R. Griffiths, 27th; L. Tench, 31st. Total, 109 points.
The club have open fixtures for the next three weeks and these will be devoted to training runs over the home course in preparation for the Liverpool & District Championships to be held at Port Sunlight on January 26th.
