The West Lancashire Cross-Country Association's annual championships, decided from the King's Own Royal Regiment, Bowerham Barracks, Lancaster, last Saturday, attracted an entry of close on 300 runners, representing 42 Lancashire and Cheshire teams.
Wallasey Athletic Club was engaged in the Youths (3 miles), Junior (7 miles), and Senior (10 miles) races, and, although the rugged hilly course proved too much for most of the Wallasey contingent some of the individual performances were very creditable.
In the Youths' race, where T. G. Downes, of Sefton H., repeated last year's victory, team honours were annexed by Warrington A.C.; R. Yeoman (Wallasey) distinguished himself by finishing 12th. Sutton A.C. won the Junior team race and individual title. W. P. Davey (Wallasey) ran extremely well to finish 3rd a very promising performance. Sutton A.C. also won the Senior team race, individual honours being won by the international runner, A. H. Williams, for the third year in succession. The Wallasey team ran steadily over the long gruelling course, a mishap to one member preventing the team from finishing in the first six; J. Edwards (17th) ran consistently well throughout the race, a remark which also applies to N. Jones (41st).
W. P. Davey and J. Edwards thus qualified for the Northern Counties Championships to held at Worsley near Manchester, next Saturday, and will run, in addition to a youths' ream which has been entered.
Inquiries for membership Wallasey Athletic Club to hon. secretary, Mr. R. G. Hyde, 14 Cromer-drive, Wallasey.
