The most popular event of the week has been the annual Past versus Present athletics match, held on Thursday eventing at the Wallasey Grammar School.
The School, who beat the Old Wallaseyans at cross-country running in March, completed their double for the season with a triumphant win of 126 points to 94. Conditions were favourable, but a strong breeze slowed the sprint times. This did not, however, stop the School from taking 1st, 3rd, and 4th places in the 100 yards, which put them well into the lead from the first. W. H. Healing (School) won this event in 11.1 secs, from A. D. Garnett (O.W.). Owen and Coleman then went on to increase this lead by taking 1st and 2nd places in the 120 yards Hurdles.
The most spectacular events were the 880 yards, the Javelin and the Mile.
In the half mile E. Williams (O.W.) took the initial lead in a very fast sprint. His terrific pace flagged at the end of the second lap and K. Owen (School) and N. I. Marples (O.W.) went ahead. In the final sprint Marples was the faster, and breasted the tape a few yards ahead.
School led from the start in the Javelin with a fine throw by W. H. Healing of 122 ft., and it looked like a hat trick win for them. E. Williams, surely the most versatile of the Old Wallaseyans, in his very last attempt, hurled the Javelin 146ft. 3ins., a record which will take some beating.
The Mile - one of the two events the O. W's managed to win completely on points, the other being the Long Jump - proved a runaway for A. P. R. Watson (O.W.) who finished with a lead of 50 yards in 4 min. 46.6 secs., from A. D. Fell (School), narrowly missing the record by 1.1 secs., put up last year by N. I. Marples.
Inter-form relay races provided exciting interludes, the fastest times being returned by the lower Fifths (A) who completed the quarter mile course in 53.3 secs. Results as follows:-
100 yards:-Healing (School) 1; A. D. Garnett (O.W.) 2; W. M. Edwards (School) 3. Time 11.1 secs.
120 yards hurdles:-K. Owen (Sch.) 1; C. S. Coleman (Sch.) 2; F. V. Pollard (O.W.) 3. Time 16.2 secs (record).
440 yards:-K. Owen (Sch.) 1; D. A. L. Rimmer (Sch.) 2; E. Dodgson (O.W.) 3. Time 55 secs, (record).
880 yards:-N. I. Marples (O.W.) 1; K. Owen (Sch.) 2; G. B. Peltor (Sch.) 3'. Time 2 mins. 9.4 secs.
One mile.-A. P. R. Watson (O.W.) 1; A. D. Fell (Sch.) 2; D. Grisdale (O.W.) 3. Time 4 mins. 46.6 secs.
Steeplechase:-A. D. Fell (Sch.) 1; N. I. Marples (O.W.) 2; T. G. Peirson (Sch.) 3. lime 2 mins. 11 secs, (record).
