In the Cheshire Schools Championships held at the Oval, Port Sunlight, on Saturday, July 2, William Poyning, Upton Road School entrant, was the only successful Wallasey competitor of the meeting, winning the 440 yards event for boys under fifteen years of age.
He won his heat easily in the time of 60 second and went on to win the final in 61.8. The final proved to be a most exacting race and Poyning beat McKeown, of Birkenhead School, by only eighteen inches.
Another Upton Road entrant, Norman Kilis, ran a very good fourth in the Junior 880 yards final. He was well placed in the running until the final fifty yards, but lacked that little extra stamina which might have given him the race.
