Running at Stretford last Sunday in the Northern Women's Championships, Barbara Banks and Janice Watts from Wallasey Athletic Club finished in 3rd and 4th places in the senior ladies 3,000 metres race. Barbara returned a creditable time of 10 min. 08 sec. and Janice recorded a personal best of 10 min. 13 sec.
At the same venue however these performances were eclipsed in the Northern Ladies Pentathlon, comprising five events, held in intermittent rain on an already waterlogged track.
Wallasey's Kathy Davenport, in only her second Pentathlon competition, produced a fine series of performances to finish 2nd with 3227 points, only 131 points behind the winner. Kathy's 200 metres time of 27.3 sec. and long jump of 5 metres 24 were particularly good in the wet conditions.
The Northern Champion ships for junior men and youths were held the previous day at Kirkby, where an improving Chris Preston finished 5th in the Youths' 134ft. 4½ in. Dave Ashton was also 5th, in the youths' 400 metres final, with a time of 55.4 sec.
The club's men's section field several seniors in their Northern Championships today, at Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, while Julie Halfpenny represents Cheshire in the inter counties schools meeting at Warley.
