At Wallasey Athletic Club's annual general meeting the retiring club captain John Wright, could only report that the club had been comparatively unsuccessful during the past season, failing to finish any teams in the major championships.
This was in contrast to the Women's Section, who, it was reported, had exceeded all expectations in the absence of their two most experienced runners, international Barbara Banks who had been undefeated up to Christmas, winning all the Northern League Cross-Country races, and Margaret Ashcroft who had been showing better form than ever before.
The Athlete of the Year trophy was presented to Dave Lockley for his consistently high performances throughout the track season, including an inter-counties steeplechase win.
The most Meritorious Performance of the Year award went to Mike Whiteside for his 2 hr. 38 min. marathon. The Hewson field event trophy was won by Andy Fulton for his second place in the Northern shot and fourth in the javelin.
The Club Athletic Championships were won by Alan Cheers in the Senior; Bob Brimage junior; Andy Fulton youth, and Neil Simpson boys. The women's awards were won by Barbara Banks senior, Susan Carter intermediate, and Julie Halfpenny junior.
The chairman thanked the retiring committee for the work they had done during the previous year. The following officers were elected: President, G. Mason; chairman, J. Edwards; hon. gen. sec., R. Tarrant; treasurer, D. Hanna; assist, treasurer, L. Durkin; cross-country captain, B. Brimage; track captain A. Fulton; chief coach, C. W. Gee; cross-country sec., R. Hewson; track sec., A. Cheers; women's captain, J. Watts; women's sec., S. Brimage; Press officer, P. Wealthy.
Two new youth council representatives were also elected: S. Carter and G. Griffiths; J. Edwards and P. Wealthy were retained as auditors. A vote of thanks was given to the retiring treasurer John Prydderch, for over 16 years' service, and he was elected as a vice-president.
Today Andy Fulton will be leading the Wallasey team at the Cheshire Championships at Sale good performances are expected especially from the jumpers who should benefit from the Tartan run-ups. Tomorrow Wallasey women's section will be competing in the first meeting of the newly formed Cheshire Women's Track & Field League.
