The second of the Liverpool & District Cross-Country league fixtures was held at Kirkby last Saturday; over a testing six miles course. Wallasey did well to finish fifth, an improvement of one place on the first race held at Woolton three weeks previously.
Notable absentees from Wallasey's team were John Wright and Ron Barlow. John, unfortunately, had other commitments and Ron is, we understand, in hospital undergoing treatment for his injured foot.
Brian Woolford was, on this occasion, first Wallasey runner to finish in 21st place. Pete White was next up in 36th place and chased home by Tony Townsend, 37th, Phil Townsend was 43rd, Jim Johnston 56th and Brian Chalton 68th completed the team, which finished fifth out of eleven teams with 261 points. Pembroke were the team winners, and second Sutton Harriers. Two Pembroke Harriers, J. Highton and L. Warriner, broke the tape together for first place.
WALLASEY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Today, the Club are organising the Wallasey Schools Cross-Country championships. A large entry has been received and we hope to make the day a success for the schoolboy athletes participating. In addition to the race for schoolboys under 16, there is a youths' race for lads aged 16 to 18 years and entries for this event will be received on the ground.
Both races are to start and finish in the playing fields at the back of St. George's Secondary Modern School on Leasowe Road.
As an incentive to these boys to join the club and continue to enjoy athletics as a sport, the club are awarding free membership to any of the finishers in the schools race who care to take up the offer.
The first race starts at 2.45 p.m. and all club members are asked to come along and assist as course stewards.
Next week the final league fixture is to take place at Crosby. Time and place of meeting will be advised later.
