Wallasey Athletic Club had their first organised run of the cross-country season last Saturday, when a pack of nearly a dozen athletes covered a nine mile course. Five senior runners all showed promise, and it is gratifying to see prospects of a stronger senior team this winter.
First place in the team will be contested by John Wright and Peter White. Place contenders will be Brian Woolford, Hugh Pritchard, Colin Harris, and Kevin Mather.
The junior team (18 to 21), although losing P. White to the seniors, is strong in numbers and should be well forward.
Ron Barlow and Dave White are in the Army and Tony Townsend will soon be conscripted, but they should be available to run in the more important races.
Ron Barlow must have an excellent chance of gaining the English title, and has the strong backing of Dave White, Phil and Tony Townsend, and Brian Chalton.
Wallasey, runners-up last year in the Liverpool & District Cross-Country League, must now be considered favourites this year, following the blow to champions Liverpool Pembroke in the car accident that caused the death of Arthur Prescott and severely injured Ron Williams.
The annual general meeting was held last night and the club officers elected for the forthcoming year will be announced next week.
Next Saturday is the Liverpool & District Monstre Meet at Prenton, headquarters of Wirral Athletic Club, at 3.0 p.m. Club members not making their own way over are asked to meet at Charing Cross, at 2.15 p.m.
