Despite a hard football game the previous day (which had an effect on all but one of his Wallasey team-mates) Dave Lockley put in a great last leg of a three-man relay at Sale last Saturday.
Running for the boys under 16, Steve Walker led off on the first lap of 1.4 miles of flat road and returned in 11th place (from 25 starters) in 6 mins. 56 secs. Johnny Jones took second leg and his good run of 6-42 put Wallasey "A" team into fifth place when he handed over to Lockley, whose run of 6-27 pulled them up to fourth place and sliced 20 seconds off his last year's time.
The "B" team were a man short, but after a 17-04 by Dave Adair (15th), and a 6-59 by Philip Wealthy, who passed three runners en route, and was 12th, substitute E. Manning of Leeds St. Marks had an identical time and place on the final leg.
UNDER-15 TEAM EIGHTH
Before the senior boys' race, the under-fifteens ran the same course of three legs, with Garry Little taking eighth place in 7 mins. 10 secs, on the first circuit and handing over to Melvin Schless, who improved the position to fifth with 7-01. Ian Wilson could not repeat his storming run of 1965 and fell back to eighth place on the final leg to finish with 7-38.
It must be stated that the competition this year was of a very high standard, with teams coming from such far-off places as Halifax and Woodford Green in London. Such clubs rarely make so long a journey to compete without bringing strong teams with them.
