A biting wind blowing across Bidston Marshes made conditions very difficult for the young athletes in the Wallasey Schools Cross-Country Championships last Saturday.
The junior event was competed for over a 1½-mile course, the winner being R. S. B. Brimage of Wallasey Technical Grammar School in a time of 8mins. 53 secs. Brimage won by only one second from P. Morfett of Moreton Secondary School. B. J. Williams of Oldershaw Grammar School was third in 9mins. 3secs. The team result was 1st Wallasey Technical Grammar School 25 pts., 2nd, Oldershaw Grammar School 28pts., and 3rd Moreton Secondary School 43pts.
The senior boys' race was won by W. Sutton of Moreton Secondary School was third. The team championship went to Oldershaw G.S. 25pts., second was St. George's Secondary School and third Moreton Secondary School.
LOCKLEY WINS YOUTHS' EVENT
The main event of the afternoon, the youths' championship, as won by Dave Lockley of Wallasey Athletic Club in a time of 15 mins. 10secs. for the three mile course. Wallasey Athletic Club had several competitors in this race as there was no schools championship. In fact Wallasey Athletic Club members took the first five place, although three of the first five were representing their schools on this occasion. Second to finish was Johnny Jones, running for Wallasey Grammar School; third, Mike McNamee, Wallasey Technical G.S.; fourth. Paul Barrie, Wallasey Athletic Club, and fifth Les Watcham, Gorsedale Secondary School.
Although there was no schools team championship for girls, this new event attracted 18 competitors from as far afield as Chester. The course was over 1¼ miles. The winner was Pat Robertson of Oldershaw G.S. in 10mins. 7secs., who beat her nearest rival, Barbara Ryan of Maris Stella, by 12 secs Jean Patten of City High School, Chester, was third in 10 mins. 25secs.
This Saturday there is being held, at Port Sunlight, the second Liverpool & District League Race, and next Saturday the club has been invited to compete in a Cross-Country Match at Warrington. The match at Warrington will have events for all age groups.
