Wallasey Athletic Club held their Christmas handicap on Saturday over the traditional 3½ mile course at Leasowe. On a fine afternoon for running, the closeness of the handicapping was such that all 23 runners finished within the space of 2 mins. 53 secs., and to spectators at the finishing line, the closing stages of the race resembled the end of an 880 yard track race.
First home was Alan Bell, who was 'off' 5 mins. He came in 100 yards clear of Margaret Ashcroft and his actual time of 19 mins. 36 secs, represents good running for a boy. Margaret had quite a battle with 3rd-placed David Adair before breaking away to leave Dave 7 secs, behind.
The next five runners home could have been covered by an "Application for Membership" form and in fact only 10 secs, separated (Mike Teahan) at 4th from Club captain Brian Woolford at 8th. In this group was Ron Barlow, running off scratch, who had the fastest time of the day. He finished 7th in 16 mins. 45 secs.
The rest of the results were: 5th, Nigel Thompson; 6th, Mike Potter; 9th, Les Watcham; 10th, John Wright; 11th, John Young; club president John Edwards; 13th, Harry Amis; 14th, Dave Field; 15th Barbara Banks; 16th, Roy Parry; 17th, Tony Parry; 18th, Colin McDonnell; 19th, Kevin Mather; 20th, John Lynch; 21st, Ramsey Hewson; 22nd, Brian Thackery; and 23rd, Barry Fishwick.
Today, there is a club run. Will new members please note that as from today the club H.Q. will be open on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 7-9 p.m.
